Edward 40 Hands
Two forties, two hands, and a race against the clock.
About the Game
Edward 40 Hands is a drinking challenge in which each player has a 40-ounce beer taped to each hand. The objective is to finish both beers within 40 minutes while following the rules.
What You Need
- Two 40-ounce beers per player.
- Duct tape.
- A timer to track the 40-minute limit.
Rules
1. Tape Your Beers
The traditional setup involves duct-taping one 40-ounce beer to each hand.
2. No Freeing Your Hands
Under the traditional rules, you can't free either hand until you have finished the beer attached to it. You should not restrict someone's hands excessively and in a way that prevents them from responding to an emergency or getting help.
3. The 40-Minute Limit
The traditional challenge sets a 40-minute limit to finish both beers. This is a completely optional time limit to encourage fun and competition. Don't force anyone to drink faster to meet the deadline if they are uncomfortable. Stopping or opting out is always acceptable.
4. No Dumping or Sharing
The traditional rules prohibit dumping beer or having someone else drink from your beer. If you can't get it done alone, there is no shame in calling it quits.
5. No Puking
Vomiting is of course a possible sign of dangerous alcohol consumption, and not always something a player can reliably control. If someone vomits, they are ejected from the game. If they feel seriously unwell, stop the game and consider seeking medical help when needed. Don't pressure people to continue drinking if they are uncomfortable.
Alcohol Safety Disclaimer
It is important to mention that drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time can cause alcohol poisoning, leading to possible loss of consciousness and death. The 40-minute challenge definitely encourages possibly dangerous binge drinking. Although some of us have completed this challenge multiple times, there is no safe way to guarantee that finishing both beers within the time limit will avoid harm.
I can't stress enough, never force or pressure anyone to drink excessively in this game, and do not use penalties in this game to encourage further alcohol consumption. Stop immediately if someone feels unwell. If a person is difficult to wake, has a seizure, has slow or irregular breathing, or is repeatedly vomiting, call 911. Do not leave them alone or assume they can sleep it off.
A person can experience alcohol poisoning even after they stop drinking. When in doubt, seek emergency medical assistance.
