1. One Shot
The original rule assigns one shot to the player who lands here.
Our custom made version of Tipsy Land. Roll the dice, move around the board, survive the special spaces, and try to reach the finish.
Blackout Land is a custom version of Tipsy Land created by The Orchard House. The spaces, special rules, and color mechanics described here are how we play our board.
This is the game WE made, not a universal rulebook. Anyone recreating it can change the rules, customize the spaces, adjust the colors, or come up with alternatives that work better for their group.
To win, your die roll must equal the exact number of spaces remaining before the Finish. If you're three spaces away, you must roll a three. A roll that would take you past the Finish does not win the game.
Our board uses different colors to create additional rules. When a space instructs a color group to drink, it applies to players whose pieces are currently sitting on spaces of that color. You can use whatever colors you like when creating your board.
Follow the wording of the individual space. If a color rule is unclear or two effects conflict, agree on how it works before continuing.
Here is the complete list of the numbered spaces on our version of the board. Use it as a reference while playing.
The original rule assigns one shot to the player who lands here.
The original rule assigns two shots.
Take a hearty swallow of your drink.
Roll both dice and add their values together. The rule calls for chugging for that many seconds.
The penalty is three shots. This can be dangerous in one turn, especially considering the next two spaces. This space's rule should only be followed once per player per game.
Move your piece back one space. If you have already landed on the previous space, we recommend ignoring the penalty.
Move your piece back two spaces. If you have already taken the penalty on that space, we recommend ignoring the penalty.
The rule calls for a shot, ready to give up yet?
All girls playing must take a drink.
Roll both dice and add their values together. That total determines the number of sips you must drink.
Create a rule that lasts for the rest of the game. Everyone must know the rule, it must be reasonable, and everyone is responsible for enforcing it. Breaking the rule results in a drink, you could of course come up with an alternate penalty.
The next player to take a turn has their drink penalties tripled. If they receive no penalty, they take none. If they also land here, the next player's multiplier becomes nonupled.
You become Question Master for one full round of players. If you ask a question and someone answers, that person receives the agreed penalty, we generally say it's 1 drink. Your group can change the duration of question master. If another player lands here, there can be multiple Question Masters.
Take a drink, then take another turn.
Distribute ten sips among any number of players in any combination, split the total however you like.
Choose another player for an arm-wrestling match. The loser drinks.
This rule calls for shotgunning a beer.
The player whose upcoming birthday is closest takes the agreed penalty, generally use a single drink as the penalty. Use the next birthday coming up, not the most recent one.
Choose another player to receive a shot.
Everyone participates in the Rattlin' Bog song game. We generally play only the last run of the song to save time.
All guys playing must take a drink.
You're in jail for up to three turns, following Monopoly-style rules. You will attempt to roll doubles to get out before your three turns are up. Agree on how to handle the turn count and unsuccessful escape attempts before playing. We generally say each fail is a drink.
Return your piece to the Start space.
The next person to speak after this space is landed on receives the agreed penalty, we just do a single drink. This includes the player who landed on it if they speak while reading the space aloud, which happens more often than you'd think.
You must finish your current drink, whether it's full or near empty.
You become Thumb Master for one round of players. At any point, place your thumb on the table. Everyone else must follow. The last person to do so receives the agreed penalty. Your group can adjust the duration.
Anyone whose piece is currently on a pink space receives the agreed penalty. We just do a single drink.
The original rule calls for a shot of Barton's vodka without a chaser. If you don't have that, then use whatever is your worst liquor.
When a player lands here, all other players say "Shh..." to them. That player can't speak for one full turn around the group. If that player speaks during the restriction, they receive the agreed penalty each time, we say it's one drink.
The original version calls for a race to shotgun a beer with another player, and the loser moving back two spaces.
Everyone takes a sip of their drink.
The player currently in the lead receives the agreed penalty, we just do 1 drink.
Move your piece to the Green Mile track in the middle of the board. Follow the special sequence described in the Green Mile section below.
Choose a player to be your drinking mate. For the rest of the game, your mate must take any drink penalty you do. This includes ANY space, such as shot, shotgun, or one of the special drinks on the Green Mile.
The youngest player drinks.
Anyone whose piece is currently on a black space receives the agreed penalty. We just do a single drink.

The person who lands on this space starts drinking . The next player begins when they do, and the chain continues around the group. The first player may stop whenever they choose. After that, the next player may stop, followed by the next, and so on. You do not have to stop just because the person ahead of you stops. In our version, the waterfall is limited to one full drink. Don't be a degenerate by readying three cans to screw everyone over.
Players who like beer or are currently drinking beer receive the agreed penalty.
Anyone whose piece is currently on an orange space receives the agreed penalty. We just do a single drink.
Anyone whose piece is currently on a peach space receives the agreed penalty. We just do a single drink.
Choose another player to take a shot with you.
Everyone takes a shot.
This is a body-shot house rule. The player who landed on this space must take a body shot off of someone. It should of course only happen with the explicit, freely given consent of the people involved.
On the count of three, everyone votes for a player. The player receiving the most votes gets the agreed penalty. We usually do just 1 drink.
Everyone says "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...", and must remain silent for one full turn around the group. Anyone who speaks during that period receives the agreed penalty each time they break the rule, we usually have the penalty be just a single drink.
The players immediately to your left and right must finish their drinks.
The rule calls for a bomb-style drink, such as a Jagerbomb, Vegas bomb, or Irish car bomb. If you don't have ingredients for one of the popular recipes, just create a makeshift bomb style shot by using two mixers and a liquor or liqueur.
The original rule calls for taking a shot upside down. If you can't do this or are uncomfortable doing it, just take a standard shot.
Play Ride the Bus using the rules for solo play on our Ride the Bus page.
Everyone tells the player who landed here to "STFU." That player cannot speak for one full turn around the group. If they speak during that restriction, the original penalty is a shot each time.
Roll a die. If the result is even, you receive the agreed penalty. If it is odd, choose another player to receive it. What we do is we say even is you drink, odd is everyone else drinks.

Choose another player for a one-on-one Speedball/Beerball challenge. If this will take too long, just both take a drink.
This rule involves a shot, immediately followed by another player throwing a cup of water in your face and slapping you. Make sure both individuals are consenting and don't be over-the-top with the slap.
Return to Start and take a shot. This effectively removes you from your current progress, you should probably just quit the game here.
This is the winning space. You must land on it with an exact roll to win the game.
The Green Mile is the separate strip of green spaces in the middle of our board. Landing on the Green Mile space sends your piece to this special track rather than continuing along the normal route.
The track has eight spaces after its entry point. In our version, the sequence is:
The Green Mile is our custom addition to the game. If you're making your own board, you can change its challenges, shorten the track, or replace its drinking penalties entirely.
Blackout Land is a custom party game, but some original penalties involve rapid or high-volume alcohol consumption. Drinking large amounts in a short period, chugging, and consuming high-proof alcohol can cause alcohol poisoning and even possible death.
The listed drinking penalties are part of our original house rules, not requirements. Players can substitute nonalcoholic drinks, small sips, or non-drinking challenges. Never pressure anyone to drink, chug, shotgun, or finish a drink.
If someone is difficult to wake, has a seizure, breathes slowly or irregularly, or repeatedly vomits, call 911. Stay with them and do not assume they can sleep it off.
